the VR II is a heavy focus breather.

While there is a difference, you perhaps exaggerate.

At 3 feet subject to sensor distance (the approximate minimum focus of the II) on DX the field of view with my II at 200 mm is 8.3 inches wide. On my f4 it is 7.8 inches wide. The difference is under 10%

Whether under 10% difference is significant to the OP is for the OP to decide.

My 200 AF macro, which changes equivalent focal length a lot by 1:1 covers a much better 5.5 inches.

My 18-200 DX, which changes equivalent focal length a lot by minimum focus, covers 10 inches.

Sometimes hand on measurements help reach a good conclusion.

Many problems turn out to be a lack of intimate knowledge as to how to get the best out of modern and often complex camera equipment.
