When you open the camera it becomes obvious that this cable has a rough existence. They use special wire that is very flexible, almost like fine strands of silk or hair, but they fail eventually. The cable in my PowerShot S5 IS has started to exhibit the symptoms mentioned above but it doesn't get used much anymore.

Point & shoot cameras are disposable for the most part, when they fail the cost of the repair is usually more than the camera is worth.
