How fast does SD1 write to UDMA cards?
Jul 28, 2013
Does it make sense for me to buy a 32 GB 1000x Lexar Pro CF card (145 MB/s write speed and 150 MB/s read speed) for $120 now, rather than a couple of slower $35 cards (16 GB each), for my Sigma SD14, if I plan to buy a Sigma SD1 in six months? I mean the cheaper cards will end up costing half the price, and I wouldn't be risking 32 GB of data in one card. I don't need the speed for my SD14, because it can probably only write at about quarter of the speed the 1000x card is capable of receiving, but when I get the SD1 the fastest performance possible is my objective. Would the SD1 work any faster with a card capable of 145 MB/s write speed vs. a card with 70 MB/s write speed? What is the limit to the write speed of a Sigma SD1? It supposedly has a "UDMA" memory card slot, but what does that really mean? UDMA has several different versions! Is the slot in the SD1 a UDMA 7 slot? UDMA 6? What if it's only a UDMA 4 slot? Then it wouldn't make any sense for me to get a fast card.
These are the cards I'm considering:

Why can't I find this information anywhere? Doesn't anyone care how fast their memory card slots are in their cameras? I have already had an issue with buying a card too fast for a camera. My Sony A55 did not receive ANY improvement in speed with a UHS-1 memory card. In fact, I had to research heavily to find out that even the new Sony A65 would not get a significant boost in performance from that new card I got. Only the Sony A77 and A99 (and presumably other new cameras from Sony and other companies) would really be able to take advantage of the speed of the new UHS-1 memory card technology.
This is frustrating!
Who has experience using different speed CF cards, including one of the latest UDMA 7 cards in the Sigma SD1 Merrill? Kendall?
