I'd possibly look at this another way. I understand the tight budget, but maybe a loan?

How often do you go on safari? Do you expect to repeat the trip sometime, often, never?

If you want the best photographs and the trip is unlikely to be repeated I'd look at buying the best kit I could, maybe a secondhand 'Bigma', Pentax 300 f4, 60-250, etc, and selling it when I got back to recover some of the cost. (Assumes you can't hire the kit).

If on the other hand all you want are snaps, buy the Tamron - not as good as the Pentax 55-300, but not far off, light in weight and very affordable.
