I see.

Anyway, my interest would go to a 16-XXmm f2.8, not a longer zoom. I think Sony should use the Fuji 18-55mm zoom as "model" for size. Don't know, for example, whether a 16-50mm f2.8 were doable within the size of the Fuji zoom. If yes, that might be the guy to glue on my Nex.

P.S.: the G-zoom will be for APS-C sensor, not FF...

Which will make it the first ILC "G" lens ever, to be for a cropped sensor. But, regardless, speeding up a lens and maintaining it over zoom range will cost something, a reason Fuji's 18-55 is f/2.8 only under 23mm (over f/3.6 by 35mm), negligible improvement in terms of speed over SEL18-55. And it is still a 3x zoom that also suffers with massive distortion issues (handled by lens correction within camera), also vignetting. Whereas, expectations from a G lens, or Zeiss, will be to ensure most of it handled well via the optics with minimal control via camera software to fix issues.

And if it were to be a trimmed down version of SAL16-50, it would still be quite considerably large, even more pronounced by slim body of the NEX. Here's some of my back to the 1980s collection:

Minolta 28-85/3.5-4.5, Sigma 24/2.8, Minolta 35-70/4, Minolta 70-210/4

With 24/2.8, 35-70/4, add 16/2.8, and I'd have 16-70 f/2.8-4 with portability, despite of using either LA-EA1 or LA-EA2 adapter for the lenses. The lenses in the middle are actually even smaller than SEL35/1.8.

And make that 16-210mm f/2.8-4 with the beer can included. BTW, total price tag on the lenses above... $148.

28-85: (Free... included with the beer can)

24: $28

35-70: $30

70-210: $90

Respectfully, I disagree.

I see such large lenses on a DSLR.

I have one such lens designed for full frame and you'd be hard pressed to find a smaller f/2.8 lens that zooms to tjat FL. That lens is Minolta 200G.

Zoom, larger sensor and larger aperture is a recipe for larger lens.
