Convenient that it so easily comes apart - some can be really difficult.

Larry, your next step is to open up your desktop case and plug this drive into a spare sata port.   Hopefully you have spare sata cables and a power lead within the MB.  If so, it's a quick 10 minute job to see if the drive itself is fine.  Boot up, maybe hold the drive in your hand and see if you feel the vibrations of it spinning up (harder with the 2.5" drives) and see if the system and windows detects it.  If so, copy off all your data immediately, and then see what tools WD has to do a full drive test.  If a full scan (may take hours) checks out, then the drive is fine - use another enclosure.  The original, if not defective, is at least untrustworthy now.

If this doesn't work, then recovery gets much more complicated.
