Yes - it was a risk with the SX50 as I was not sure how useful the zoom would be to me as I had never had that much zoom before.
What is interesting to me is after having replaced the SX50 with the cheap Sony HX200 I do find use for the HX200 - even with only half the zoom. Primarily I got it as a video camera but I use it for photos too. Overall photo quality is slightly better on the SX50 but I only notice when I pixel peep. Video quality is much better on the Sony. I prefer the colours of the HX200 shots. However, the main advantage seems to be the handling. Even my wife pointed out that the Sony is nice to use - and she is generally camera phobic. To her (and me) the nice features are the auto switching eye piece and the control ring around the lens. Focus seems faster too. Sometimes ergonomics trumps absolute photo quality.
