I've got to agree with Mike. I made the change from a D300 to D800E a year ago and for web and small prints you won't notice much difference, but the prints from the D800E are noticeably better from 13x9in upwards (more detail, sharper).

It depends on what your 'finished product' is - if it's only for web images or small prints then you might be better off saving your money and sticking with the D300. I do a lot of landscape prints of 13x9 and 16x12 and the D800E is much better than the D300. The 300 is a great camera, built like a tank and has served me very well for 5 years but since I got the 800 I've never used it.
