Third, the 70D has taken on quite a lot of the 7D's spec at a reduced price point.

The 70D has taken certain parts of the four-year-old 7D's spec. That says practically nothing at all about a potential 7D2 in late 2013/early 2014.

There is a HUGE gap between the 70D and the 5D3, waiting for a 7D2 to drop right in to. And the feature mix of the 6D is so different as to have no bearing on it at all.

I don't think so - the 6D fits right in the price gap between the 70D and 5DIII, sure, it's a very different camera, but it's still there at the price point. The point I was making is that those three cameras together nibble away at the market - sure none is a complete replacement, but they are all alternatives. If the only purchasers of the 7D were people who must have precisely that spec or nothing then you might have a case, but in truth that is only a part of the people who would formerly have bought a 7D. First there are the people who wanted a fast cam with very good AF and wouldn't go all the way to a 1D, well for them, or a good part of them now there is the 5DIII. Then there are the people who just decided they wanted a Canon camera and would spend $2k on it, the 6D gives them something to look at, then there are those who want a fast APS-c camera with very good AF, the 70D makes an offer for them, and even if the 7D is better, some will be thinking 'I could get another lens with the difference'. So each of those in its own way erodes the potential market for a 7D. The question is, is there enough left to make it viable - one would have thought that if there was, Canon would have replaced the 7D somewhat earlier. usually their top end models are on a three year cycle, why have they not followed that with the 7D - especially since their main competition apparently left them an open goal?
