The way you processed it, 5DIII image looks better with higher contrast. This alone makes 5DIII image look more natural, slightly sharper with more pop in colors. D800 image looks comparatively flat. Resolution wise, no difference. I wouldn't say reversal, but hardly noticeable difference.

+1 on your observation.

Yes indeed there is a diminishing return.  The bottleneck is lens that is not good enough to fully take advantage of excessive amount of pixels.

Zeiss T 35mm f/2 on 5DIII vs D800  - tied at 17 mpix

Sigma 35/1.4 on 5DIII vs D800  - 19 vs 23 mpix

Bear in mind that DXOMark above tests probably cap to MTF 30 or even 50 resolution.  D800's extra 14mp certainly will be still visible some degree below the cap when view at pixel level.  You really need best lenses to fully leverage 36mp.

If we leave the processing aside, I have noticed that unprocessed RAW images from D600 often look slightly flat compared to same 5DIII image, usually because of lighter shadows. Of course this can be easily changed in the post to one's liking.
