Well, I find one advantage for me in this situation: most likely they don't expect a tourist to have a weapon. They attack apparently easy targets, therefore might be at least surprised when I show my weapon. If they don't run, I shoot. Heck, even if they run: they're pure junk.

Why on earth would you make such a fundamental, mistaken conclusion like that?    An obviously organized and experience team - in Russia! - would not be prepared for someone to fight back?

My strong opinion is that each of these thugs had defined roles.   Note the coordinated response after the theft occurred to keep a guy between the victim and his stolen property.    I bet 2 or 3 of the others had knives within quick access, and as soon as they saw a weapon being drawn, they'd have knifed the guy in the gut and scattered.   Getting a gun (in Russia!) out of a backpack, and then somehow shooting 6 (!) guys - to get a lens back?    You have a lot to learn, and some of it's going to be very painful.
