Back in the '70s I relied on specifications and reviews in magazines (akin to today's web surfing) before deciding on a camera that I mail-ordered from some outlet in NYC sight-unseen.  I don't even know where I could have gone to actually touch a new SLR back then.

Come to think of it, back in 1955 malls were pretty scarce.

Yeah - and enclosed malls didn't yet exist in the US.  The first was Southdale in 1956.
