FWIW, one of the very best guides I've encountered on odonata is a slim reference (fewer than 100 pages) called "Damselflies of the Northeast" by Ed Lam.

Lam is a professional nature illustrator who has painted superb, full-color illustrations for this guide. There are three or four detailed views for each of the species he describes, and IMO their usefulness, on average, surpasses that of the typical photo-illustration that one expects to see in guides nowadays. Each species is described in detail as to its physical characteristics, seasonal and range data

It might seem a bit pricey, but it's unlikely an odonata enthusiast would regret spending $20 for this gem. It's available directly from Lam's web site: http://www.edlam.net/order.html

Phil

P.S. According to his web site, Lam is working on producing a Peterson Field Guide for dragonflies.
