The Nokia 41mp does have a clever zoom system built in , it crops to zoom so to speak - better than it sounds!

The math doesn't work. Zooming in 2x reduces pixel count by 4x. Zooming in 20x, like with my wife's camera, reduces pixel count by 400x. How's that 0.1MP looking to you?

or most of the time you can take a few steps closer. most people can live without a 20x zoom. in fact most people have never owned one.

Sure if you are just a snap shooter but if you are into photography and self identify as a photographer (armature or pro) than you probably know the focal length of the lens can have a significant impact on the look of the image and therefore you choose the focal length you want to use deliberately whenever possible instead of just zooming or walking with whatever lens you happen to have until you fill the frame. The main point of a zoom is to have many different focal lengths to choose from, like having a more convenient set of primes. For snap shots of your daily life to post on facebook a fixed focal length cell phone is fine but it will never replace a camera with interchangeable lenses or a fixed optical zoom for those who are doing photography in a more serious way.
