My choice nissin - value for money!

Once you start taking flash you will find you want more flexibility, such as the ability to bounce, or take reasonable pictures from more distance and have more of the scene illuminated. These things take power. So you can start with something like the 270Ex and then soon find you want the 430Ex. The numbers (27, 43) represent the amount of power.

If you are taking anything semi-pro then you'll want even more with more facilities.

I'm not familiar with 3rd party alternatives, there are many will work adequately but some may not be so integrated. Canon's own range allows full control of settings from the camera and from the flash control panel.

i was looking out for an external flash for over a month did some reviews and today finally bought nissin  di 866mkii.

excellent value for money.

my choices were canon480 exii , nissin dI 622, di866 and Metz 58.

Compared all of them and as a beginner I'd suggest to go for nissin di622 mkii.

It can be a slave and has good power.

My purchase was after some price comparison on ebay also...

I believe, Its not the camera, its the person behind the camera who takes good pictures..
