I never cleaned any sensor, I see that I'll have to take the plunge

Larger "dust" like that is what i think of as a fiber floats around pretty easily. You need to get yourself a hand operated rocket blaster - air bulb type of device so you can blow it away without risking any damage to your sensor. buy one of these blowers designed and cleaned for camera use. Also, point the lens opening downward when blowing into the camera. Do not extend the blower nozzle into the interior of your camera body.

I had a fiber like that about a month ago, blowing seemed to move it from one area to another until it finally left the camera.
