The future of digital camera makers...?

Are digital camera manufacturers and conventional cameras at the end of an era? In yesterday's news, I read this article.

http://www.nbcnews.com/technology/were-taking-more-pictures-ever-so-why-are-cameras-dying-6C10607491

What do others think about this conclusion?  Are we at the end of the line, or will new technology extend the future for "conventional" digital cameras?  (Point and shoot, and DSLR's)

I for one prefer to have things in life simple... a digital camera being just a digital camera, and not half a dozen other gadgets combined as one.
