OTOH, the fact that the 24-70 II can stand toe to toe with good primes for landscape applications is illuminating to say the least.

I want to strengthen this statement a bit.

The fact, and I honestly believe that the following is a fact, that the 24-70 II can attain equal or near equal IQ to the best primes is an amazing feat for Canon after years of mediocre UW and UWA performance, performance that drove many to seek out alternatives from the antique lenses of by-gone brands to current production lenses of its major competitor and adapt them to our Canons for any semblance of clarity outside of Zone A & B.

Canon rolled out the TSE-24, TSE-17mm  and later the 24L II a few years back which were all vastly superior improvements over their original versions (the 17 being an original itself) particularly in corner/edge performance. But, the 24-70 II is a zoom and it is competing at or near these lenses' level IMO. Absolutely amazing given the history.

Off-topic. From a landscapist's point of view, if Canon can do for the 16-35 range what it has done for the 24-70 range, Canon would have a truly outstanding range of superior lenses from 16mm to 200mm.
