I agree with this. I had the 18-55 and 55-200 lenses with my D3100 kit and while they were OK as starters, I was disappointed with the lack of sharpness.

If starting over with the D5200 I would buy something like the kit linked to below (it comes with a few extras like spare battery, holster bag and memory card) or just the body only and the Nikon 35mm f/1.8 lens for around $200.

If you get into birding you'll definitely want a zoom or telephoto that reaches to at least 300mm. I'm happy with the Nikon 70-300mm VR and you'll see many fine photos taken with it posted in this forum. Check out bird pics from Rudy Pohl here.
