M is far from useless, it just may be something you don't need for the type of photography you do.

I dont mean to say its useless, just that there is no advantage over S in this situation using a manual lens. Perhaps there is something I haven't considered ...?

With a manual lens in S you have more options available than you do with M - such as Auto ISO & exp.comp, if you need to use them.
