How does iContrast on S90 work?

Hello,

I am just curious how the iContrast on S90 (and very likely on other similar Canon cameras) works. I am attaching two identical pictures, one taken with a normal setting (second picture) and the other with the iContrast engaged (first picture). That picture really shows a certain contrast moderation. I see a little bit different exposure setting with an increased sensitivity. Is this the only downside of using the iContrast (I mean a higher ISO)? Thanks in advance for your replies.
