Second reality check.

Do civil engineers need to document their projects? Use your existing knowledge to add value to whatever photo skills you acquire.

Before you buy a body, you need to decide what you want to photograph.

Your choice of camera may depend on your planned use, particularly if that use involves specialized techniques or accessories/lenses. Architectural photography? Go with Canon, their tilt-shift lens lineup is much better than Nikon's. Affordable bird photography? Canon, at the moment, because there are two good choices of OEM fast-autofocusing lenses under $2,000.00, and a good high-frame-rate, big-buffer action camera being discounted (the 7D). Macro, up to 1:1? Any system will do, there are excellent third-party as well as OEM lenses available.
