How to determine the distance of the subject with camera and lenses?

Hi,

I know (please correct me if I am wrong) that:

a) on most of the lenses there is a scala indicating the distance of the subject

b) (most) lenses transmit distance information to the camera

As for a) it is difficult for me to read that scala, because it is not linear. Do you know how to make sense of it?

As for b) I have read that some cameras put the mesured distance of the photographed subject in the EXIF header. Is that true? This is however not true in the case of the D600, right? What about the other Nikon cameras?

Thank you.
