Hi all,

Just wanted everyone to know (hopefully to help protect yourself), that Nikon is refusing to replace my defective equipment even though all of it is under warranty.

I have a Nikon D5100, 55-200 lens and 50 mm f/1.8 lens.

The camera always front focuses when using the optical view finder (but not live view).

Nikon admits that the problem is there and had asked me on 3 different occasions to send the equipment back for repair and each time they are unable to repair it & just send it back to me in the same broken state.

They finally agreed that since they cannot repair it that they would replace the equipment. When I asked them to send me a confirmation email that they were going to replace the equipment, they refused to, and told me that they would just try to repair it again.

Needless to say this is unacceptable.

Unfortunately it looks like I will need to have the BBB settle this.

Lots of money to spend for equipment that doesn't work, and this company is not willing to back up what they sell (at least not in my case).

Very sad.

I can't help but think there's more to this story.

Nope, nothing more too it.

As per Mako, Nikon has some odd policy that if you ask them to confirm or put in writing that they will replace an item, that they then balk at doing the replacement, even if they said that they had intended to do it previously...
Pretty much an idiotic business policy, IMHO. This time I just kept asking what they can do to fix the problem and they finally agreed (again after balking the first time) to replace the body.

Hi Juggernaut.

I am a Little confused.

Is it so in US, that the warranty and rules for Exchange and so on is related to the manufactorer, and not to the reseller?

And what is NikonUSA but a kind of an importer? Or are they in US responsable to the manufactoring too? And to the warranty?

In Europe (EU) the situation is clear. Any kind of responsability for any goods sold to a customer, is at the reseller, from toothpaste to jetplanes - and can not be pushed away to any other link in the chain. Thats why we don't give a damm to Nikon's, Canon's or Pentax's policies - except they are better than the law and announced in public. Neither do we to the policies to Ford, GM or Toyota.

Thats why I am confused, that you have sent the camera to Nikon and not to the reseller, and that you have argued with Nikon, and not the reseller.
