You are saying if I do FEL then I've spot metered the subject? But if I don't do FEL then I haven't spot metered the subject?

Yes, that's what I'm saying.

If you don't use FEL, the E-TTL II metering system uses either Average or Evaluative metering (as chosen by menu). With Average flash metering, the subject is assumed to be everything in the frame — well, the part of the frame covered by the metering sensor. With Evaluative flash metering, the subject is assumed to be whatever gives the brightest return of the pre-flash other than suspected specular reflections (usually the closest object).

If you use FEL, the E-TTL II metering system uses Spot (or Partial on cameras without Spot) metering. The subject is assumed to be in the center of the frame when the FEL button is pressed.

Three different flash metering modes.

So I fix the camera on a tripod, take a scene without FEL, then retake the scene with FEL, and it is possible that I will get different exposure.   Thanks for that.
