At f4.5 the 18-55 looks like the bottom of a coke bottle compared to the 10-24

Valid point Stacey. I sometimes tend to "pigeon-hole" my analysis and only look at the settings that are relevant to how I shoot and what I need. This thread, for me, is all about landscapes and maximum depth of field sharpness. If I want to shoot something with a fast aperture I would be using a prime like the 35mm f1.8. I would never argue on behalf of the 18-55 with the aperture wide open.

A 35mm looks great at 18-24mm..
