... "smartphone +1" (meaning the same pictures as one would take with a smartphone, but with better IQ/postprocessing/high ISO) photography!

The recently released Ricoh GR is the perfect example of that. The GR is as small as a smartphone, has the same fixed FL wide-angle lens as a smartphone, lacks an OVF or EVF of any kind just like a smartphone, and if you want it can shoot just like a smartphone (i.e. full Auto).

The advantages over a smartphone? Better IQ, much better high ISO / low light capabilities, and much, much more flexible postprocessing options.

The GR is the latest iteration in a long line of "street-oriented" cameras from Ricoh. But street photography has become a minuscule niche that would be unable to sustain the production levels of any modern camera. Otoh, "smartphone+1" photography is a rapidly expanding market with huge sales potential.

Ricoh has just stumbled upon it with a hip $800 gadget, the GR, which is just missing the WiFi connectivity. Let's see who is next and what they come up with (even Apple could enter this market). Oh yes, and Samsung's Android camera is completely missing the point here...
