The 650D is pretty cheap online and people tend to praise its Live View, so effectively it would be my cheap temporary upgrade.

I can understand the case for getting a 650D, but not as a temporary solution. The problem is it forces you to choose the 17 mm TS-E, which (I assume) wouldn't be the lens you want when you have a full frame body.

It would be the lens to want on FF. With an 1.4x TC it is both a 17mm and a 24mm solution, and with great results. Try that with the 24mm on its own...

On that basis the only solution is full frame now, since you only get a 24 mm equivalent FoV on 1.6x crop.

You must be writing something else than you are typing.

Just as an observation, though - the world appeared to be quite happy with 24 mm as the widest available TS-E lens until 2009.

Then you can say that the world was quite happy with no TS-E before the first TS-E. And that the world was quite happy without a long macro (180/200mm) before the 200mm Canon macro. And that the world was quite happy without (fill in any advancement in lens design).

A very silly "observation", to be frank.
