I saw a patent application on canonrumors.com for the 85 1.2 II. Re price, how much higher can it go? I know Zeiss will price their new manual focus lenses above $3,000. they designed these for the D800E and similar cameras.

I wouldn't be surprised if Canon adds $1000 to the current street price or more.

Consider that the asking price of the newest versions seems to be the original list price of the older version plus a huge markup.

I've also noticed that Camera body prices tend to fall a lot faster than lens prices.  The 5D3 dropped over $500 from its original list price.  The 24-70/2.8L II dropped $200 over nine months - which makes it only $900 more than the last street price of the 24-70 mk I which you can't buy anymore.

OTOH, I sold my five year old 70-200/4L IS for more than I paid for it new due to Canon jacking up their list prices.

There's been plenty of patent applciations on canonrumors.

As for buying a 85L:  you could explore the used market first such as on Craigslist.  Canon USA refurb can be very tempting since these lens comes with a 3 month Canon warranty, but, they tend to cost more when you factor in tax and shipping.  KEH.com is a good site to judge how much you might have to pay for used L glass.
