The 35 1.8 is a cracking lens at a very competitive price. Its fast (aperture wise) and quite sharp and the max aperture of 1.8 gives good control of depth of field. I am not sure about its use for close up photography though. If your requirements for the food images are for whole plates of food ir would be ok. But remember you would need  to be quite close to the subject owing to the short focal length. Other options would be the 40mm Nikon Macro lens,r the 60mm macro lens. The latter would be better choice as it allows a greater distance between camera and subject for arranging the lighting etc. It would also be good for your family photos as it would be equivalent to a 90mm, a classic for portraits.
