How do professionals get good copies of lenses?

Re: What is a "bad copy"?

I can say without a doubt that there are problem lenses.  Canon in particular has issues with lens shifting on certain zoom lenses.  Once an element has shifted, it seems Canon can not ever get the problem resolved.  They re-align the elements and six months later, the problem has repeated itself.  About the only way to resolve the problem is to sell it to someone doing portraits where edge to edge is not as critical as it is to an architectural or aerial photographer.  I haven't seen any problems like this on the newer Mk II lenses.
