You (and Sir Carrington) are correct, it was probably because you were too close. You didn't mention which lens you were using, but each has a minimum focal distance, and non-macro lenses tend to start at about a foot away. Some lenses have this distance printed on them, either with the word "Macro" or a little flower icon next to the distance.

There's a slim but not likely chance that it was just because your camera couldn't find anything to focus on. If you switch to manual focus on your lens, you can override this behavior, letting you shoot all you want, but it may come out just out of focus. If you're shooting a still subject, you can improve how well you manually focus by using live view.
