SL1 : Low tide at the beach
2

I took my SL1 to the beach for the first time recently and it didn't disappoint. After nearly 1000 shots after a little over a month of ownership, I'm starting to get quite comfortable with it, both in physical use and in post processing. Handling wise, I never understood the criticism about the SL's lack of buttons compared to other models. After owning several dSLRs, I find that all I need quick access to are external controls for aperture/shutter speed, ISO, AF point and EV. It's all there on the SL1. As a RAW shooter, it's a waste dedicating a button function to Picture Styles. With the touch menu, anything else I need quick access to I used MyMenu.

The SL1's auto-focus continues to impress with it's reliability. Being able to trust all nine sensors when the subject movement is unpredictable is very empowering. Not having to limit oneself to the center AF point and re-frame allows for more interesting compositions when the situation is moving quickly. Somehow the SL1 is able to get it right most of the time.

I'm reasonably happy with the 55-250 IS used for these shots, but given what the SL1 is capable of, I just may consider adding a better telephoto lens to my collection.
