Why doesn't the EOS M amplify the screen in low light, when set to M mode ?

I bought the EOS M thinking I could do some off-camera flash work in low light.

However, when I set the camera to manual and dial in a comfortable strobist setting (Base ISO, 1/125s, f/4.5) the screen goes completely dark. Only when I activate auto-focus does the screen amplify enough such that I can see my compositions.

After auto-focus has completed and before I take a picture the screen goes dark again. It's really frustrating! Is there any way to keep the camera's screen permanently amplified in Manual Exposure mode, just like on my Sigma DP1?

Thanks for any tips which will point me in the right direction!!
