85 1.8 on 5DIII vs. 50 1.8II on 40D?

Also, would the 85 1.8 really be optically better (since it's a prime) than, say, my 70-200 2.8L IS II? Leaving aside the concern that the latter might be unwieldy, optically I think it is unmatched by the 85?

Unless you have a bad copy of the 70-200 2.8L IS II, that lens blows away the 85mm f/1.8. I wouldn't say the same thing about version I of the 70-200mm, but the 85mm has rarely left my bag since I got the 70-200mm.

The 85mm may have smoother bokeh, but that depends on the situation going on in the background. As far as the sharpness and detail in the in-focus areas, the 70-200mm blows the 85mm out of the water most of the time. It's also faster and more accurate in autofocus.

I get the 85mm when I want even shallower DOF (though I can get plenty of that with the 70-200mm, so I rarely use the 85mm for that reason alone), or I'm doing really low-light photography.
