If you still want to try mf lenses, other than the "iq" you should also check how long is the throw (rotation angle) of the lens itself. The bigger the better for accurate focusing.

I'm on the NIK side of photography.

The D7100 comes with a live view mechanism which I suppose consumes more battery power but is pretty good at helping me focus. I even found the liveview to be good at recording movies using zeiss 50mm  lens. If you go to zeiss website, I think you will find a tutorial on "manual focussing using live view"/
