About the best you can do with the 100-300 is to make sure that you use the lens at its best. I have tested it and found that the image quality is significantly better at F/7.1 and f/8 as opposed to wide open or f/6.3. So use aperture priority and set F/7.1. Then, make sure you have a fast enough shutter speed. If you use auto Iso the camera will set 1/500 sec at 300mm. If that is not fast enough for you, set a manual Iso to get what you need.

Next, switch OIS Off. Although the image stabiliser will improve the image quality at slower shutter speeds, it will always degrade the image when using faster shutter speeds. Use a tripod if it works for your situation.

Finally, shoot in Raw and crop as hard as you dare. Using Ex Tele Conversion with jpegs just does an in-camera crop so it really doesn't help if you are going to crop anyway.
