Is there a REALLY effective way to get more Zoom from a Pany 100-300mm?

I've used three copies of the 100-300. I've come to a couple of conclusions:

  • The glass is not good enough to support more zoom -- and for the price I'd not expect it to be.
  • More often than not the quality of the atmosphere between camera and target is the limiting factor, at least where I should most frequently.

Don't get me wrong: I really value the 100-300 and have some great keepers from it (e.g., whales off Maui) I'd not have otherwise. But if there was a 100-300 of the quality of my 35-100 f/2.8 I'd jump on it in a minute. The 35-100 is that much better, IMO.
