NX20 image artifacts -- what causes these?

Hi,

I was testing exposures for moon shots last night, thus pretty much just taking a lot of bracketed shots. After 22 shots tiny white dots started appearing in the background at high Clarity settings in LR. (These are much more apparent at 100%.) I didn't check all images, but every one of the first 22 I checked were dot-free and all those after had varying degrees of these dots.

I'm new to LR (and any image editing in general), just having gotten the beta, so I'm still in "what does this setting do?" mode, which is why I noticed this. The dots start appearing around a setting of +50. This image is at +100. Only Clarity causes this; highlights or whites at max didn't show any sign of these. (I guess a related question is what exactly does Clarity do? I can see the effect, but what does it do at a pixel level?)

This is from an NX20 with the 50-200mm zoom. Exposure settings make little or no difference in this. The sky wasn't completely black; it was deep twilight. (9:10pm near San Jose.)

Thanks for any help/insights/guesses!

Maybe need to work on focus too...
