Manufacturing requires an IC fab, which costs a few billion dollars. Not many companies have that kind of pocket, so it tends to be pretty centralized. Sony is one of the biggest sensor manufacturers, and we're unlikely to see many companies manufacture sensors. We do and will continue to see many companies design sensors, or modify standard designs.

We will also see many people claim that Company X designed a Sony sensor despite there not being a single piece of evidence to back up that claim.

9 years of Fujifilm camera usage, ended by rampant fanboyism.

Not really true.  The people who know about these things can and do point to differences.   They might not be big differences, but there is some customization going on.   Sony may have the basic photosite design, say, but Nikon has a different analog-digital converter circuitry than Sony uses.   Nikon has a lot of its own sensor patents, even though they don't make their own sensors.   They are known to combine their technologies with others.  Fuji has had some unusual designs over the years, but now it's mostly the color filter arrays.   That sounds trivial but it's not when the sensors now do quite a lot of image processing.  Stuff like noise reduction.   I wouldn't be at all surprised if the X-Trans design hadn't required some fundamental reworking of the sensor circuitry.
