Let's concentrate on the shorter tele lenses - they have nothing in common.

But even at the longer tele lenses I get a bandwidth of some 25 % with 1.19 for the lowest and 1.46 for the biggest.

(not having taken the real area of the bulbous shape of the front element into account - only the diameter and the calculated areas)

The price is a function of the effort that has been put in the lens and the price the manufacture is willing to charge - so more a market price then a production price.

So a 500 f/5.6 could be much cheaper or not - all dependent on the produced volume and willingness of the manufacture to do a lower price.

A 500 f/5.6 could be 3 k USD or 6 k USD - up do Canon. I guess the potential volume should be lower then the combined volume of the 300 and 400 f/2.8 (which share the same formula)
