Generally, you should not shoot directly on the sun as it will damage the sensor and this applies to all cameras.

It is inaccurate to say it 'will' damage the sensor. It 'can' damage the sensor if one isn't careful. Over the years I've taken a great many direct shots of the sun with a number of different digital cameras, P&S and DSLR, and have never damaged a sensor. Of course, one should exercise care when shooting the sun and not leave the camera pointed at it for any longer than needed to take the shot.

I should have said, if you point the camera in a long period of time. Quick shot is fine and I have tried it too a couple of times.
