I am going on a photo trip in 5 days to heights of around 4000-5000m. Currently I have the kit lens 18-55 and a 50mm 1.8. Which ONE lens should I get for landscape photography? I plan to change the body in the next 2-3 months, so I hope this lens can be used with the new Canon model as well?
The difficulty with shooting huge mountains using an ultra wide angle such as a 10-22 is that it makes them like ant hills. Anything that's very close will look relatively large compared to the background at 10mm. 18mm might be all the width you might need on that trip.
It might be a good idea to have a look at flickr or google images to see if there's anything you can find that's shot in the area you're going. Try to find out what focal lengths are used on the pictures that you like and want to be able to shoot yourself. In your research you can also have a loot at the time of day and location/angle that the shot was done. Even the older 18-55mm is capable of great images, it's the photographer that makes all the difference.
Canon EOS 40D
Canon EOS 7D
Canon EF 50mm F1.8 II
Canon EF 85mm F1.8 USM
Canon EF-S 10-22mm F3.5-4.5 USM
