To lift shadows: If there is detail in the shadows, they can easily be recovered in digital files. Detail in blown highlights cannot be recovered in digital, as easily as in film.

Sometimes, shadows are also lightened, even if there are no details in them, just to reduce the dynamic range of the image, to get a more pleasing result.

Shadow areas can easily be lifted in all software, if they have masks, by duplicating the layer, and using levels, curves etc and lightening the entire image to get the shadows the way you want it. This will obviously blow out the highlights. Then place a mask in the layer (hide all black mask), and paint back in with white, the shadow areas you want to recover. Obviously, this will reduce contrast, which you can increase similarily with another layer with masks.
