I would say that you could go with the $920 Panasonic HC-X920 for your main camcorder, and the cheaper $500 Panasonic HC-V720 in the hands of the students.

The Panasonic read my mind...

If you would rather go with Sony, then get the $950 Sony HDR-PJ710V as your main camcorder, and get the $600 Sony HDR-PJ580V for the students.
