I really liked it, as for go-around lens it has pretty good quality/price ratio.

After that add 70-200 F2.8 zoom, preferably with optical stabilization too. Or you can explore prime lenses, 35mm, 50mm, 105mm macro. I do not like extra long zooms like 18-200 etc, they cannot provide good quality by definition.

I was looking at both the Sigma and the Tamron 17-50 f2.8 would you say the Sigma is better than the tamron?

I like sigmas, not sure why. I had tamron some years ago, had issues with quality and tech support, never had any issues with Sigma, so, I am just loyal to the brand.

may have not be a best explanation but I have now several sigmas and they work fine, 70-200 F2.8 zoom works fine since 2002 I think, not even sure when exactly I got it, so, it is a good quality stuff, their top like HSM lenses and they are cheap enough.

from online reports it looks like sigma has slightly better contrast than tamron but I would think those 17-50 zooms are pretty much the same now, same technology. Nikon loses a ton of money for not making same lens on its own name.
