I believe the 7D sensor only receives down to f/2.2 and fakes lower f/.
You have been misinformed. The f-number is part of the lens and has nothing to do with the sensor.
For the OP, these two lenses have quite different focal lengths (I have both) - which fits your portraits, kids shots and whatever you understand "walk around" to mean? The Canon 50 1.8 will sometimes give a slightly less pleasing bokeh than the 30 1.4. Both can focus well and are very sharp. I prefer using the 30, particularly if if I ever want to manually focus is a much pleasanter experience - I like it a lot. But, if the 30mm field of view is wrong for you then so is the lens.
