Are my lenses or my expectations broken?

I just got my Canon FD to NEX adapter and eager as I was I immediately attached it to my old lenses and started shooting. But something is wrong, methinks. I can't seem to alter the exposures. In both A and M modes I have taken shots with maximum and minimum aperture while keeping shutter at 1/40 and ISO 100. So these should have been rather differently exposed. But they look the same. I thought I could change aperture on the lens ring and have it affect the exposure. Is that not so?

Side-question: What is the "lock/open" twist setting for? It's not for locking the lens in place on the adapter and it does not seem to affect the exposure either.
