I didn't say anything about the bif issue, that was the OP.  I really don't think that has anything to do with the lack of detail here.  It could be because of the resizing to post here and the original images are much sharper.  It could be that the lens is not all that sharp at the settings in use.  I could be from movement of the camera during capture.  I have no idea what the cause is, but would like to know!  If the owls had been stationary and the camera on a tripod, would the images be sharper at the same settings?  That is the issue I was addressing to Trevor and I am still curious about the answer.
