Battery grip and AA's

Next august, I will go on a hiking trip through Labrador and will be 2 weeks disconnected from the modern world like poweroutlets. I have 2 batteries now, can borrow 1 of a colleaque and will probable add a new original canon one so I have 4 batteries. That should be sufficient I hope.

What do you do when you buy a new original canon battery? Should i charge and recharge it a few times to get the maximum capacity? Or is this no needed anmore?

How do you uncharge it? Could it damage the camera when I switch on the slideshow till the battery is empty?

If you're not entirely in the wilderness, get a battery grip that can accommodate AA batteries. Those can be had everywhere in the world even in small trader stores. It adds a bit of bulk and is not cheap, but it's a replenishing power source. In a pinch it will save your back.
